What To Do If You’ve Been Burgled

Burglar Inside A Home

If your home lacks properly-maintained security systems, there’s a chance that an intruder could make it a target. Finding out that you’ve been burgled can be a shock, and will come with a lot of unpleasant feelings. Being the target of crime is stressful, and it’s not always easy to know what to do. We’ve put together a short guide which you can use to take the next steps after finding out you’ve been burgled.

Immediately After Discovering The Burglary

It’s common to panic upon realising that you’ve been burgled. If you can, try to remain calm. If you haven’t yet entered the building, do not go in or try and find the burglar. Call the police as soon as you can and find a safe place. Don’t enter your home until the police have arrived and confirmed that it’s safe to do so.

If you realise the burglary has happened after you’ve entered your home, make sure you don’t touch anything. Your fingerprints could tamper with vital evidence, and you may end up making it much more difficult for police to catch the criminal. It’s best to retreat to a safe place and phone the police as soon as you realise what’s happened.

After The Police Have Left

Once the police have done their job, collected evidence and ensured there’s no intruder in your home, there’s a few things you should do. First, if your bank account details may have been compromised, you must phone your bank and let them know. This also applies if any laptops or mobile phones have been tampered with or stolen.

If valuables have been stolen or your property has been damaged, you should phone your home insurance provider. They’ll need to know the crime reference number that the police have given you so that you can make a claim.

Install Security Systems

When the most important tasks have been done, it’s time to put some thought into your home’s security. Once you’ve been burgled, it can be hard to feel secure in your property. Installing burglar alarms and CCTV cameras can give you the peace of mind that your home won’t be a target of crime again.
